οἰκτείρω; future (as if from οἰκτειρέω, a form which does not exist) as in the Sept. οἰκτειρήσω, for the earlier οἰκτείρω, see Lob. ad Phryn., p. 741; (Veitch, under the word; Winers Grammar, 88 (84); Buttmann, 64 (56)); (from οἶκτος pity, and this from the interjection οἱ, "Oh!); to pity, have compassion on": τινα, Romans 9:15 (from Exodus 33:19. Homer, Tragg., Aristophanes, Xenophon, Plato, Demosthenes, Lucian, Plutarch, Aelian; the Sept. for חָנַן and רָחַם). (Synonym: see ἐληω, at the end.)

P Petr III. 56 (d).12 (iii/B.C.) ὤμοσά σοι τὸν πάτριον ὅρκον ἐπὶ τοῦ ποταμο ̣υ ̣̑, ib. 104.10 (B.C. 244–3) κε [χει ]ρογραφήκασι τὸν εἰθισμένον ὅρκον τοσούτου μεμισθῶσθαι ";they have written under their hands the usual oath that it was let for this amount"; (Edd.)—with reference to a farm holding, BGU III. 1002.15 (B.C. 55) ἐὰν δέ τίς σοι ὅρκος ἢ ἐπίδειξις ἐπιβληθῆι περὶ αὐτῶν, ἐγὼ αὐτὸς ἐπιτελέσωι κτλ.—a deed of sale, and P Ryl II. 88.26 (A.D. 156) ἢ ἔνοχος εἴην τῷ ὅρκ [, ";otherwise may I be liable to the consequences of the oath";—a common formula. Cf. also the unusual formula P Eleph 23.20 (B.C. 223–2) ε [ ]ορκοῦ [ντι ] μέμ μ [ο ]ι [ε ]ὖ εἴη, ἐφιορκοῦντι δὲ ἔνοχον ̣ εἶναι τῆι ἀσεβείαι τοῦ ὅρκου. With Luke 1:73 cf. Pelagia-Legenden p. 13.9 ἐν ὅρκῳ ὅρκῳ εἶχεν τοῦ μὴ γεύσασθαί τι.

For an oath sworn on the Gospels see P Lond V. 1708.228 (A.D. 567?) ἑκάστου τούτων ἐνωμότως θεμένου ὅρκον ἐπάνω τῶν σεπτῶν μεγαλί (= εί)ων, and cf. P Mon I. 1.26 (A.D. 574) τὸν ἐνώμοτον καὶ φρικτὸν ὅρκον ἐπὶ τῶν θείων καὶ ἀχράντων καὶ σεπτῶν κειμηλίων ( ";relics"; ). On various forms of oaths from the inscrr. see Herwerden Lex, s.v. ὅρκος, and for the idea of ";fence,"; ";something that shuts you in"; (cf. the cognate ἕρκος), underlying the word cf. Murray Rise of the Greek Epic, p. 265 f. The dim. ὅρκιον is found in OGIS 453.25 (B.C. 39–35).
