ὅθεν (from the relative pronoun ὁ and the enclitic θεν which denotes motion from a place) (from Homer down), adverb, from which; whence; it is used a. of the place from which: Matthew 12:44; Luke 11:24; Acts 14:26; Acts 28:13; by attraction for ἐκεῖθεν ὅπου etc., Matthew 25:24, 26; cf. Buttmann, § 143, 12; (Winers Grammar, 159 (150)).

b. of the source from which a thing is known, from which, whereby: 1 John 2:18.

c. of the cause from which, for which reason, wherefore, on which account (A. V. whereupon (in the first two instances)): Matthew 14:7; Acts 26:19; Hebrews 2:17; Hebrews 3:1; Hebrews 7:25; Hebrews 8:3; Hebrews 9:18; Hebrews 11:19; often in the last three books of Macc.

Vocabulary of the Greek NT

For ὅρασις = ";seeing,"; ";the act of sight,"; cf. Wünsch AF 4.26 (iii/A.D.) ὁρκίζω σε τὸν θεὸν τὸν τὴν ὅρασιν παντὶ ἀνθρώπῳ χαρισάμενον, P Lond 46.147 (iv/A.D.) (= I. p. 70) ἐγώ εἰμι ὁ ἀκέφαλος δαίμων ἐν τοῖς ποσὶν ἔχω (ν) τὴν ὅρασιν, and the dedicatory Syll 774 (= .3 1141).2 (Imperial) ἀγαθῇ τύχῃ. Στρατία ὑπὲρ τῆς ὁράσεως θεᾷ Δήμητρι δῶρον, an offering made by Stratia to the goddess Demeter on account of restored sight. For the meaning ";appearance,"; as in Revelation 4:3, cf. P Leid Wxiii. 36 (ii/iii A.D.) (= II. p. 127) ὁ μεταμορφούμενος ἐν ταῖς ὁράσεσιν. A curious use of the word occurs in OGIS 56.56 (B.C. 237), where it is employed as a title of the daughter-goddess of the Sun—ὅρασιν αὐτοῦ, i.e. ";oculum Soils"; (see Dittenberger’s note). In an inscr. in C. and B. ii. p. 653, No. 564, we find εἰς ὅρασιν καὶ εἰς ὅλον τὸ σῶμα αὐτῷ καὶ εἰς τέκνα καὶ εἰς βίον, ";sight, body, children, life,"; all of which are to feel the κατάραι ὅσε ἀνγεγραμμένα [ι ἰ ]σίν if the tomb is disturbed. Ramsay thinks the curses are Jewish. For ὁρασείας = ὁράσεις in the sense of ";visions"; (as in Acts 2:17) see P Strass I. 35.5 (iv/A.D.) with the editor’s note. The word, which survives in MGr, was commonly used by the Church Fathers to denote the ";visions"; of the monks.
