Thayer's Expanded Definition

ξένια, ξενιας, (ξένιος, ξένια, ξενιον, and this from ξένος), from Homer down, hospitality, hospitable reception; equivalent to a lodging-place, lodgings: Acts 28:23 (equivalent to τό μίσθωμα in Acts 28:30 (but this is doubtful; the more probable opinion receives the preference under the word ἴδιος, 1 a.)); Philemon 1:22. (See especially Lightfoot on Philippians, p. 9, and on Philemon 1, the passage cited.)

Vocabulary of the Greek NT

This conversational diminutive (John 12:14) may be illustrated from P Oxy I. 63.11 (ii/iii A.D.) τοὺς δειγματοάρτας καθ᾽ αὑτὸν ἀναπέμψαι πρὸς ζυγοστα [σ ]ίαν λαβόντα παρὰ τῶν ἀρχεφόδων ὀνάριον, ";send up the inspectors yourself to the examination, gelling a donkey from the chiefs of the police"; (Edd.) : c. the double diminutive in P Ryl II. 239.21 (mid. iii/A.D.) πανταχόθεν ἴδε αὐτ ̣ῷ μικρο ̣, ν ̣ ο ̣̔̓ν ̣αρίδιον, ";look out everywhere for a small donkey for him";(Edd.). The word appears as a diminutive of ὄνος in its less usual sense of ";wine-cup"; in P Giss I. 47.17 (time of Hadrian) τὸ ὀνάριον τὸ χαλκοῦν, BGU I. 248.26 (ii/A.D.) ὀνάριον ὑπὸ τρίχωρο (ν) οἴνου.
