The spelling λεγιών, which is always found in the NT occurrences of this Latin word (Matthew 26:53, Mark 5:9; Mark 5:15, Luke 8:30), is supported by numerous exx. in the papyri, e.g. P Lond 256 recto (a).3 (A.D. 15) (= II. p. 99) λεγιῶνος δευτέρας κἰκοστῆς (= καὶ εἰκοστῆς), BGU I. 140.7 (time of Hadrian) λεγιῶνο (ς) [β ̄], ib. 156.1 (A.D. 201) Διογένης στρατιώτης λεγιῶνος β ̄, P Oxy XIV. 1666.6 (iii/A.D.) γεγραφηκὼς περὶ τοῦ μεικροῦ Παυσανίου ὡς εἰς λεγιῶνα στρατευσάμενον, ";having written you about the little Pausanias becoming a soldier"; (Edd.), and BGU III. 899.1 (iv/A.D. ?) στρατιώτης λεγιόνω [ς ] (l. λεγιῶνος) πέμπτης Μακαιδωνικῆς (l. Μακεδονικῆς) : cf. also ib. I. 113.11 (A.D. 143) λ ]ε ̣γει [ῶν ]ος. The spelling λεγεών is also found—BGU IV. 1108.3 (B.C. 5) λ [ε ]γεῶν [ο ]ς, P Oxy II. 276.9 (A.D. 77) λεγεῶνος δευτέρας, BGU I. 21iii. 13 f.
