Nothing earlier than Diodorus (i/B.C.) in ";profane"; Greek is cited for this word by Grimm. It occurs in five documents of P Tebt I., three of them ii/B.C., and two a little later : cf. also the Ptolemaic P Eleph 14.2 τῶν μὲν ἀμπελώνων τοὺς καθήκοντας ἀργυρικοὺς φόρους. Its appearance in P Hib I. 151 (c. B.C. 250) is presumably coeval with the LXX; nor does the language (. . . μὴ παραγίνεσθαι. . . τρυγήσοντα τὸν ἀμπελῶνα, from a fragment of a letter) suggest that the word was new. It occurs indeed frequently in Rev L, a few years older still. For an instance contemporary with its NT appearances, see PSI 823 (A.D. 65) τῶι ὑπάρχοντι ἡ ̣μ ̣ῖ ̣ν ̣ . . . ἀμπελῶνι : cf. P Tebt II. 35715 (A.D. 197) τέλ (η) . . . ἀμπελῶνο (ς) κατοικ (ικοῦ) (ἀρούρας) α ̄, ";taxes upon 1 aroura of catœcic vine-land."; The suffix -ών (like -̯tum in Latin) denoting plantations of trees was productive in Hellenistic : see under ἐλαιών.
