I unfading, λειμών Luc. Dom. 9: metaph., σοφία LXX Wi. 6.12; κληρονομία 1 Peter 1:4, cf. CIG 2942c (Tralles); πνεῦμα prob. in IPE 2.286 (Panticapaeum): neut. pl. as Adv., Philostr. Im. 1.9.

With the use of this adjective in 1 Peter 1:4 κληρονομίαν . . . ἀμάραντον may be compared a passage in the Apocalypse of Peter 5, καὶ ὁ κύριος ἔδειξέ μοι . . . τὴν γῆν αὐτὴν ἀνθοῦσαν ἀμαράντοις ἂνθεσι . See also a poem engraved on a sepulchral monument erected by Euergetes II. (B.C. 145–16), in honour of his wife Aphrodisia, where the following words occur, μένοιτ᾽ ἐπὶ γῆς ἀμάραντοι , ὅσσον ἐγὼ ναίωι δώματα Φερσεφόνης (Archiv i. 220). Wisdom of Solomon 6:12 reinforces this rare Petrine word (cf. ἀμαράντινος Wisdom of Solomon 5:4) : for its outside record see Thayer, who quotes CIG II. 2942 (c).4, a iii/iv A.D. inscription on a gladiator’s tomb, ending ἔσχ [α ] τέ [λος ] βιότον χερσὶν φονίαις ἀμάραντο [ν ]. It is a proper name in P Ryl II. 16630 (A.D. 26) Γάιος Ἰούλιος Ἀμαρ [ά ]ντου .
