I aor.2 imper. Med. of ὁράω; but,
II ἰδού (on the accent v. Hdn.Gr. 1.417, al.), as Adv., lo! behold! (even with words of hearing, ἰδοὺ δοῦπον αὖ κλύω τινά S. Aj. 870 (lyr.), cf. El. 1410):
1 with Nouns and Prons., ἰ. χελιδών Klein Meistersign. 133 (Attic vase, vi B.C.), etc.; ἰ. ἐγώ here am I, LXX Genesis 27:1,al.; ἰ. ἡ μνᾶ σοι Luke 19:20; οὐκ ἰ. Ἀαρών; LXX Exodus 4:14.
2. with Verbs, in the imper., ἰ. θεᾶσθε S. Tr. 1079, Ar. Ach. 366; esp. in offering a thing, take it ! ἰ. δέχου παῖ S. Ph. 776. in ind. of all tenses, ἰ. πείθομαι E. Or. 143 (lyr.): freq. in LXX and NT with past tenses, Genesis 24:15,al., Matthew 27:51, al.; in the middle of a sentence, Luke 13:16.

ἰδού, a demonstrative particle (in Greek writings from Sophocles down), found in the N. T. especially in the Gospels of Matthew and of Luke, used very often in imitation of the Hebrew הִנֵּה, and giving a peculiar vivacity to the style by bidding the reader or hearer to attend to what is said: "Behold! See! Lo!" It is inserted in the discourse after a genitive absolutely, Matthew 1:20; Matthew 2:1, 13; Matthew 9:18; Matthew 12:46; Matthew 17:5; Matthew 26:47; Matthew 28:11. καί ἰδού is used, when at the close of a narrative something new is introduced, Matthew 2:9; Matthew 3:16; Matthew 4:11; Matthew 8:2, 24, 29, 32, 34; Matthew 9:2f, 20; Matthew 12:10; Matthew 15:22; Matthew 17:3; Matthew 19:16; Matthew 26:51; Matthew 27:51; Matthew 28:2, 7; Luke 1:20, 31, 36; Luke 2:9 (R G L Tr brackets),

Moulton (Proleg. p. 11) has shown that the frequency with which ἰδού (originally the imper. of εἰδόμην and accented ἰδοῦ) is used by certain NT writers is due to the fact that they were accustomed to the constant use of an equivalent interjection in their own tongue : cf. Wellhausen Einl. .2 p. 22. As showing, however, that the interjection was used in the Κοινή where no Hebraistic influence is predicable, we may cite P Oxy VII. 1066.5 (iii/A.D.) εἰδ [ο ]ὺ οὖν ἀπέστιλά σοι αὐτήν, with reference to the return of a file, ib. 1069.11 very illiterate (iii/A.D.) εἰδοὺ γὰρ καὶ τὸ πορφύρειν μετὰ τῶν συ [ν ]έργων κεῖντε, ";see, the purple is put with the tools"; (cf. l..6), ib. X. 1291.7 (A.D. 30) οὐδ [εί ]ς μοι ἤνεγκεν ἐπιστολήν περὶ ἄρτων, ἀλλ᾽ εὐθέως, ἠ (= εἰ) ἔπεμψας διὰ Κολλούθου ἐπιστολήν, εἰδοὺ ἀρτάβηι σοι γίνεται, ";no one has brought me a letter about the bread, but if you send a letter by Colluthus, an artaba will come to you immediately"; (Edd.), ib. 1295.3 (ii/iii A.D.) ἰδοὺ μὲν ἐγὼ οὐκ ἐμιμησάμην σε τοῦ ἀπ (οσπ)ᾶν τὸν υἱόν μου, ";see, I have not imitated you by taking away my son"; (Edd.). A curious verbal parallel to Luke 13:16 occurs in the Christian letter BGU III. 94.36 (iv/v A.D.) γινώσκιν ἐ [θ ]έλω ὅτι εἶπέν σοι ὁ πραγματευτ [ὴς ὅ ]τι. . ᾑ μήτηρ σου Κοφαήνα ἀσθενῖ, εἰδοῦ, δέκα τρῖς μῆνες : cf, P Oxy I. 131.12 (vi/vii A.D.) καὶ ἰδοὺ τρία ἔτη σήμερον ἀπ᾽ ὅτε ἀπέθανεν. For ἰδού followed by a noun in the nom. without a finite verb, as in Luke 22:36, cf. an old Attic inscr. ἰδοὺ χελίδων, cited by Meisterhans Gr, p. 203, § 84, 2. See also Epict. iv. 11. 35 ἰδοὺ νέος ἀξιέραστος, ἰδοὺ πρεσβύτης ἄξιος τοῦ ἐρᾶν καὶ ἀντερᾶσθαι (cited by Sharp Epict. p. 100). MGr ἐδῶ, ";here"; : cf. the French ici from the popular Lat. ecce hic.
