II oblong shield (shaped like a door), PSI 4.428.36 (iii B.C.), Inscr. ap. Plu. Pyrrh. 26, Callix. 2; hence, of the Roman scutum (opp. ἀσπίς,= clipeus), Plb. 2.30.3, 6.23.2, D.H. 4.16, cf. Ephesians 6:16, Apollod. Poliorc. 163.2, Arr. Tact. 3.2, etc.
III disk forming part of καθετήρ, IG 11(2).287 B 68 (Delos, iii B.C.). Math., oval, Procl. in Euc. 1 Deff. 3,8.
θυρεός, θυρεοῦ, ὁ (from θύρα, because shaped like a door (cf. Winers Grammar, 23)), a shield (Latinscutum); it was large, oblong, and four-cornered: τόν θυρεόν τῆς πίστεως, equivalent to τήν πίστιν ὡς θυρεόν, Ephesians 6:16. It differs from ἀσπίς (Latinclipeus), which was smaller and circular. (Polybius, Dionysius Halicarnassus, Plutarch, others.)

2. In late Gk. (Polyb., Plut.), the scutum, a large oblong shield: θ . τ . πίστεως , Ephesians 6:16 (cf. Wisdom of Solomon 5:20, where ὁσιότης is likened to the ἀσπίς , the clypeus or small round shield of the light-armed soldier).†
