θήρα (Latinfera; perhaps from root to run, spring, prey, Vanicek, p. 415; cf. Curtius, § 314), θήρας, ἡ; from Homer down; a hunting of wild beasts to destroy them; hence, figuratively, of preparing destruction for men (A. V. a trap), Romans 11:9, on which cf. Fritzsche.

PSI IV. 350.4 (B.C. 254–3) ἐμοὶ δὲ τῶι ὄντι πρὸς τῆι θήραι εὐτάκτως ἐφέλκεται τὰ ὀψώνια, P Tebt II. 612 (c) (i/ii A.D.) θήρας ἀγρι ̣ω ̣ν Τεβ [τ ]ύνεως : in P Hamb I. 6.11 (A.D. 129) μηδὲν ἀπὸ θή [ρ ]ας ἰχθύας π ̣εριγεγονέναι μεχρὶ ν ̣ῦν, the reference is to the tax paid on fish caught in Lake Moeris, cf. PSI II. 160.8 (A.D. 149). See also OGIS 82.6 (end of iii/B.C.) στρατηγὸς ἀποσταλεὶς ἐπὶ τὴν θήραν τῶν ἐλεφάντων τὸ δεύτερον, Preisigke 285.2 (Ptol.) οἱ ὑπογεγραμμένοι κυνηγοὶ ἐπὶ τὴν θήραν τῶν τράγων.
