Vocabulary of the Greek NT

For the religious connotation of this verb, cf. two of the recently discovered libelli, P Ryl II. 112 (a).4 (A.D. 250) καὶ ἀεὶ μὲν θύουσα καὶ εὐσεβοῦσα τοῖς θεοῖς διετέλεσα, ib. (c).6 ἀεὶ μὲν τοῖς θεοῖς θύω καὶ εὐσεβῶ διατελοῦσα, where the dat. is due to θύειν. For the constr. with the acc., as in Acts 17:23, see a decree by Epaminondas attached to Nero’s decree cited s.v. εὐσέβεια, where the Emperor is belauded as προειρημένος εὐεργετεῖν τὴν Ἑλ (λ)άδα, ἀμειβόμενος δὲ καὶ εὐσεβῶν τοὺς θεοὺς ἡμῶν παριστανομένους αὐτῷ πάντοτε ἐπὶ προνοίᾳ καὶ σωτηρίᾳ (Syll 376.36) : see also s.v. ἀσεβέω. The verb is followed by the more regular πρός in Michel 1558.22 (iii/B.C.) πρὸς τοὺς θεοὺς εὐσεβεῖν.
