Thayer's Expanded Definition

εὐθύς, εὐθεῖα, εὐθύ, the Sept. for יָשָׁר (from Pindar down), straight;

a. properly, straight, level: of a way (Matthew 3:3); Mark 1:3; Luke 3:4; Acts 9:11; εἰς εὐθεῖαν (L T Tr WH εἰς εὐθείας), namely, ὁδόν (an ellipsis common also in classical Greek cf. Winer's Grammar, § 64, 5), Luke 3:5; εὐθεῖα ὁδός the straight, the right way, is figuratively used of true religion as a rule of life leading to its goal, i. e. to salvation, 2 Peter 2:15; αἱ ὁδοί κυρίου, the right and saving purposes of God, Acts 13:10 (Song of the Three Children, verse 3).

b. tropically, straightforward, upright, true, sincere (as often in secular authors): καρδία, Acts 8:21 (εὐθεῖς τῇ καρδία often in the Psalms, as Psalm 7:11; Psalm 31:11 (); ()).

STRONGS NT 2117: εὐθύς (adv) εὐθύς (adv), adverb (from Pindar down), equivalent to εὐθέως, with which it is often interchanged in the manuscripts (see εὐθέως); straightway, immediately, forthwith: Matthew 3:16; Matthew 13:20; John 13:32, etc. (Cf. Phryn. ed. Lob., p. 145.)

Vocabulary of the Greek NT

εὐθύς, as an adj., is found in an early iv/A.D. Christian letter, where the writer asks for prayers—P Oxy XII. 1494.8 εἵν᾽ οὕτ ̣ω ̣ς ̣ ἐπακούσῃ ὁ θαιὸς τῶν εὐχῶν ὑμῶν καὶ γένηται ἡμεῖν ὁδὸς εὐθεῖα, ";in order that God may thus hear your prayers, and a straight way be made for us"; (Edd.) : cf. 2 Peter 2:15.

εὐθύς, instead of εὐθέως, is now read in almost all the occurrences in Mk, and, though not so common as εὐθέως, can also be illustrated from the Κοινή. Thus in P Petr II. 13(9).5 (B.C. 258–253)—a document already cited under εὐθέως —we have εὐθὺς τἀντίγραφα ἔπεμψα : cf. PSI IV. 403.20 (iii/B.C.) παρέσομαι δὲ κἀγὼ εὐθὺς ἐξ ἑορτῆς, P Oxy IV. 744.7 (B.C. 1) (= Selections, p. 33) ἐὰν εὐθὺς ὀψώνιον λάβωμεν ἀποστελῶ σε ἄνω, P Fay 109.2 (early i/A.D.) εὐθύς σε οὐ κρατῶι, ";I at once give in to you"; (Edd.), P Ryl II. 234.4 (ii/A.D.) For the form εὐθύ see P Leid Ci. 27 (B.C. 162) (= I. p. 119) ε ]ὐθὺ μέλαινα ἐγένετο —an account of a dream, and the Alexandrian Erotic Fragment P Grenf I. 1 i. 24 (ii/B.C.) νῦν ἀνοργισθῶμεν · εὐθὺ δεῖ καὶ διαλύεσθαι, ";let us now cease from anger : yes, we must quickly be reconciled."; The Markan use of εὐθύς is discussed by J. Weiss in ZNTW xi. p. 124 ff. In MGr an unaspirated form εὐτύς is also found.
