2. οἱ ἑ., board of magistrates at Olbia, SIG 495.2 (iii B.C.); οἱ ἑ. ἄνδρες, = Lat. septemviri epulones, D.C. 48.32. (I.- E. sept[macutenull], cf. Skt. saptá, Lat. septem (fancifully connected with σέβομαι, Ph. 1.30, Theol.Ar. 43): Hsch. has τεπτά, i.e. ηεπτά.)
ἑπτά, οἱ, αἱ, τά, seven: Matthew 12:45; Matthew 15:34; Mark 8:5; Luke 2:36; Acts 6:3, etc.; often in the Apocalypse; οἱ ἑπτά, namely, διάκονοι, Acts 21:8. In Matthew 18:22 it is joined (instead of ἑπτάκις) to the numeral adv. ἑβδομηκοντάκις, in imitation of the Hebrew שֶׁבַע , Psalm 118:164

As we have no fresh light from our sources, it lies outside our sphere to discuss the uses of this number in the NT, but reference may be made to the notes by Allen on Mark 16:9, and by Moffatt (in EGT) on Revelation 5:1. Note also Acts 12:10 D κατέβησαν τοὺς ζ ̄ βαθμούς and Ev. Petr. 8 ἐπέχρισαν ἑπτὰ σφραγῖδας. MGr ἑφτά shows the aspirate in compensation for the loss (in pronunciation) of the rough breathing.
