1. reference, esp. to an arbiter in decision of a law-suit, ἠξίουν δίκης ἐπιτροπὴν σφίσι γενέσθαι ἢ ἐς πόλιν τινὰ ἢ ἰδιώτην Th. 5.41; ἡ ἐ. τούτῳ πρὸς Παρμένοντα γέγονε D. 33.23; εἰς ἐ. ἔρχεσθαι ib.14; ἡ ἐ. ἐγένετό μοι ib.16; τὴν ἐ. λῦσαι ibid.; ἀνέντες τὴν ἐ. having declined it, Th. 5.31.
2. generally, power to decide, ἐ. διδόναι τινὶ περί τινος Hp. Decent. 17, cf. Schwyzer 195.10 (Crete (from Delos), ii B.C.); διδόναι τῇ συγκλήτῳ τὴν ἐ. It is = ";the office of guardian"; in P Oxy VI. 898.24 (A.D. 123) αἰτοῦσά μ [ε ] ἀντὶ ταύτης ἀποχὴν τῆς ἐπιτροπῆς, ";demanding from me in return a receipt for her guardianship,"; P Ryl II. 153.20 (A.D. 138–61) οὓς [οἶδα ἐπιτηδείου ]ς καὶ ἀξίου [ς τ ]ῆς ἐπιτροπῆ [ς, ";whom I know to be suitable and worthy of the office of guardian,"; and = ";the office of procurator"; in BGU I. 16.8 (A.D. 159–60) (= Selections, p. 84) τῆς τοῦ ἰδίου λόγου ἐπιτροπῆς. In MGr ἐπιτροπή = ";committee.";
