Vocabulary of the Greek NT

ἐπιδίδωμι is the ordinary formula for sending in a report to a magistrate or official body, e.g. P Oxy II. 255.16 (A.D. 48) (= Selections, p. 47) ὀμνύω. . . εἶ μὴν [ ]ξ [ ]γιοῦς καὶ ἐπ᾽ ἀγηθείας ἐπιδεδωκέναι τὴ [ν π ]ροκειμένην [γρα ]φὴν τῶν παρ᾽ ἐμοὶ [ο ]ἰκούν [των, ";I swear that assuredly the preceding document makes a sound and true return of those living with me";—a census-return; P Fay 28.11 (A.D. 150–1) (= Selections, p. 82) διὸ ἐπιδίδωμ [ι ] τὸ τῆς ἐπιγενήσεως ὑπόμνημα —a notice of birth; P Oxy I. 79.10 (A.D. 181–92) (= Selections, p. 89) διὸ ἐπιδίδωμι [τὸ ] βιβλείδιον ἀξιῶν ταγῆναι αὐτὸν ἐν τῇ τῶν τετελευτηκότων τάξει —a notice of death; BGU I. 287.16 (A.D. 250) (= Selections, p. 116) Αὐρήλ (ιος) [Δι ]ογένης ἐπιδ [ (δωκα —a certificate of pagan sacrifice. Cf. also P Oxy III. 487.5 (A.D. 156) Σερῆνος ἐπέ [δ ]ωκέ με εἰς ἐπιτροπὴν ἀφηλίκ [ω ]ν υ ̣[ ]ῶν, ";Serenus appointed me guardian of (two) minors."; For other exx. see s.v. βιβλίον, and the editor’s note on OGIS 515.38 (iii/A.D.).

With the use of the verb in Acts 27:15 we may compare P Par 49.9 (B.C. 164–158) εἰς πᾶν τό σοι χρήσιμον ἐμαυτὸν ἐπιδιδόναι. In P Lille I. 3.89 (after B.C. 241–0) συνχρημάτιζε ὅ [σα ]ς ἂν ἡμέρας ἐπιδω ̣ηι, the editors treat the verb as an opt.; but see Proleg. p. 55, where similar forms are treated as subjunctives. For the subst. see P Ryl II. 119.29 (A.D. 54–67) καθ᾽ οὗ καὶ πλείστας ἐντυχίας καὶ ἐπιδόσεις ἀναφορῶν ἐποιησάμεθα, ";against whom we made numerous petitions and presented reports"; (Edd.), and for the adj. ib. 233.11 (ii/A.D.) λόγον. . . ὑφ᾽ ἓν γεγραμμένον κεχωρισμένον δὲ εἰς δ ̄ ἐπιδοσίμους, ";an account written under one head, but divided into 4 sections.";
