Th. 4.5, etc.; ἄξεις τότ' ἀμελιτῖτιν ὁρτὴν ἐξ ὁρτῆς Herod. 5.85; ὁρτὴν ποιευμένους Hdt. 1.150; ὁρτὴν ἀνάγειν Id. 2.40, 48, al.; ἑορτὰς ἑορτάσαι X. 2. generally, holiday-making, amusement, pastime, παιδιᾶς καὶ ἑορτῆς χάριν Pl. Phdr. 276b, etc.; so ἑορτὴν ἡγεῖσθαι τὸ τὰ δέοντα πρᾶξαι Th. 1.70.

3. prov., κατόπιν ἑορτῆς ἥκειν to have come the day after the fair, Pl. Grg. 447a; ἀεργοῖς αἰὲν ἑορτά every day's a holiday to those who don't work, Theoc. 15.26, cf. Herod. 6.17; ἄγουσιν ἑ. οἱ κλέπται Suid.

4. assembled multitude at a festival, ὄχλος καὶ ἑ. καὶ στρατὸς καὶ πλῆθος Plot. 6.6.12.

John 13:29) περιστερείδι ̣α ἡμεῖν ἀγοράσηι, P Fay 118.16 (A.D. 110) ἀγόρασον τὰ ὀρνιθάρια τῆς εἱορτῆς, P Oxy III. 475.17 (A.D. 182) ἑορτῆς οὔσης ἐν τῇ Σενέ [πτα, ib. IV. 725.36. (contract of apprenticeship—A.D. 183) ἀργήσει δὲ ὁ παῖς εἰς λόγον ἑορτῶν κατ᾽ ἔτος ἡμέρας εἴκοσι, ";the boy shall have 20 holidays in the year on account of festivals"; (Edd.), ib. IX. 1185.29 (c. (iii/A.D.) μάθε τοῦ Μώρου ὅτι τί θέλις ἀγοράσομεν εἰς Ἀντινο ̣υ (l. -ο ̣ου), we may perhaps supply ἑορτήν, as in Jn l.c.
