ἐξίστημι,
I causal in pres., impf., fut., aor. 1: —
1. displace: hence, change, alter utterly, τὰν φύσιν Ti.Locr. 100c, Arist. EN 1119a23, cf. Plot. 6.2.7; τὴν πολιτείαν Plu. Cic. 10; ἐ. τῆς ποιότητος τὸν οἶνον Id. 2.702a.
2. metaph., ἐξιστάναι τινὰ φρενῶν drive one out of his senses, E. Ba. 850; νοῦ οἶνος ἐξέστησέ με E. Fr. 265; τοῦ φρονεῖν X. Mem. 1.3.12; ταῦτα κινεῖ, ταῦτα ἐξίστησιν ἀνθρώπους αὑτῶν D. 21.72; simply ἐ. τινά drive one out of his senses, confound, amaze, Hp. Coac. 429; ἐξιστάντα καὶ φοβοῦντα τοὺς ἀνθρώπους Muson. 1 of Place, arise out of, become separated, ἐξ.. ἵστατο Νεῖκος Emp. 36, cf. 35.10; stand aside from, ἐκστάντες τῆς ὁδοῦ out of the way, Hdt. 3.76; ἐκ τοῦ μέσου X. An. 1.5.14; θάκων καὶ ὁδῶν ἐ. Pol. 1309b32; αἱ δημοκρατίαι ἐ. εἰς τὰς ἐναντίας πολιτείας degenerate into.., ib. 1306b18, cf. Rh. 1390b28: abs., ἐ. μὴ μεταφυτευόμενον Thphr. HP 6.7.6, etc., cf. ἐξίστημι: likewise ἐξιστάω and ἐξιστάνω (Acts 8:9 participle ἐξιστῶν R G, ἐξιστάνων L T Tr WH (see ἵστημι)); 1 aorist ἐξέστησα; 2 aorist ἐξέστην; perfect infinitive ἐξεστακέναι; middle (present infinitive ἐξίστασθαι); imperfect 3 person plural ἐξίσταντο;
1. In present, imperfect, future, 1 aorist active to throw out of position, to displace: τινα τοῦ φρονεῖν, to throw one out of his mind, drive one out of his senses, Xenophon, mem. 1, 3, 12 φρενῶν, Euripides, Bacch. 850; hence, simply to amaze, astonish, throw into wonderment: τινα, Luke 24:22; Acts 8:9.
2. In perfect, pluperfect, 2 aorist active and also the middle,
a. to be amazed, astounded: Matthew 12:23; Mark 2:12; Luke 8:56; Acts 2:7, 12; Acts 8:13; Acts 9:21; Acts 10:45; Acts 12:16 (the Sept. for חָרַד, to tremble, Exodus 19:18; Ruth 3:8, etc.); ἐξέστησαν ἐκστάσει μεγάλη, they were amazed with a great amazement (see ἔκστασις, 3), Mark 5:42; ἐν ἑαυτοῖς ἐξίσταντο, Mark 6:51; with the dative of the thing: μαγείαις ἐξεστακέναι, had been put beside themselves with magic arts, carried away with wonder at them, Acts 8:11 (but this form of the perfect is transitive; cf. Buttmann, 48 (41); Veitch, 339); ἐξίσταντο ἐπί with the dative of thing, Luke 2:47 side oneself, insane": 2 Corinthians 5:13 (opposed to σωφρονεῖν); Mark 3:21 (cf. Buttmann, 198 (171); Winer's Grammar, § 40, 5 b.); (Greek writings, where they use the word in this sense, generally add τοῦ φρονεῖν, τῶν φρενῶν: Isocrates, Euripides, Polybius, others).

The verb is common in the sense of ";resign"; property, etc., e. g. P Oxy II. 268.11 (A.D. 58) ἡ δὲ Ὠφελοὺς καὶ αὐ [τὴ ]ι ̣ ἐξέσταται τῶι Ἀντιφάνει τοῦ κατ᾽ αὐτὴν μ [έ ]ρους τῶν ὑπὸ τοῦ μετηλλαχότος αὐτῆς πατρὸς Ἡρακλᾶτος ἀπολελιμμένων πάντων, ";and Ophelous on her part resigns to Antiphanes her share of all the property left by her late father Heraclas"; (Edd.), P Tebt II. 380.19 (A.D. 67), P Ryl II. 75.6, .10, .16 (late ii/A.D.), ib. 117.22 (A.D. 269) al. Ἐξέστην occurs in BGU IV. 1208.87 (B.C. 27) : cf. also ib. II. 530.18 (i/A.D.) (= Selections, p. 61) κινδυνεύω ἐκστῆναι οὗ ἔχω [κλή ]ρου, ";I run the risk of losing the allotment which I now possess."; See further for the usage of Mark 3:21, 2 Corinthians 5:18, Menandrea p. 47.64 ἐξέστηχ᾽ ὅλως, and ib. p. 57.275 ἐξέ [στηκα ] νῦν τελέως ἐμαυτοῦ καὶ παρώξυμ [μαι σ ]ϕ ̣όδρα, and Vett. The trans, use ";bewilder,"; ";confound,"; as in Luke 24:22, Acts 8:9, is illustrated by Musonius p. 35.12 ταῦτα γὰρ δὴ τὰ ἐξιστάντα καὶ φοβοῦντα τοὺς ἀνθρώπους ἐστίν, ὅ τε θάνατος καὶ ὁ πόνος.
