In P Hamb I. 31.19 (ii/A.D.) a certificate is granted to a retired soldier who had served for 26 years, and been discharged ἐντείμῳ ἀ ̣πολύσσει, ";with honourable release"; : cf. for a similar use of the adv. with ἀπολελυμένος of an ";hononrably discharged"; veteran, P Oxy XII. 1471.6 (A.D. 81), ib. 1459.4 (A.D. 226), P Lond 906.4 (A.D. 128) (= III. p. 108), BGU IV. 1021.2 (iii/A.D.), Preisigke 424, while the magical BGU IV. 1026.4 (p. 25), ἔντιμος (l.—ον) ὡς Μιχαήλ, ἔνδοξας (l.—ον) [ὡς ] Γαβριήλ, ";suggests,"; as Dr. E. A. Abbott (CR xxxi p. 153) has pointed out, ";a connection between ἔντιμος and the military distinction of Michael, as contrasted with the peaceful glory of Gabriel."; These and similar exx. have led Abbott (ut s.) to the conclusion that in Luke 7:2 the epithet ἔντιμος is almost certainly misplaced, and should be attached not to the ";servant"; but to the ";centurion"; in the sense of ";honourable."; This meaning suits all the other NT passages, where the word occurs—Luke 14:8, Philippians 2:29, 1 Peter 2:4; 1 Peter 2:6 (see Hort’s note on .4). Syll 837 records the freeing of a female slave μηδε [νὶ μη ]δὲν προσήκουσαν κατὰ τοὺς Αἰτωλῶ [ν ] νόμους ἰσοτελῆ καὶ ἔντειμον, and in the iii/A.D. Hadrumetum imprecatory tablet (BS, p. 274 ff.) after the invocation we have—.3 ἄκουσον τοῦ ὀνόματος ἐντίμου καὶ [φοβ ]εροῦ καὶ μεγάλου καὶ ἄπελθε κτλ.
