ἐνισχύω,

I strengthen, confirm, ὁ χρόνος ταῦτα -ύσει πάντα Hp. Lex 3; ἄγγελος ἐνισχύων αὐτόν Luke 22:43 : Pass., Jul. Gal.Fr. 7.

II intr., prevail in or among, ἐν ταῖς πόλεσι ἐνισχύει τὰ νόμιμα Arist. EN 1180b4: abs., Id. PA 653a31 al.; τοῦτ' ἐνισχύειν ἑκάστῳ Thphr. Sens. 63, cf. 67; παρά τισιν ἐ. ἐν παροιμίας μέρει D.S. 20.58; ἐνίσχυσεν ὡς.. the opinion prevailed that.., Id. 5.57.

Thayer's Expanded Definition

ἐνισχύω; 1 aorist ἐνισχυσα; (cf. Buttmann, 145 (127));

1. intransitive, to grow strong, to receive strength: Acts 9:19 (here WH Tr marginal reading ἐνισχυθη); (Aristotle, Theophrastus, Diodorus, the Sept.).

2. transitive, to make strong, to strengthen (2 Samuel 22:40; Sir. 50:4; Hippocrates leg., p. 2, 26 χρόνος ταῦτα πάντα ἐνισχυει); to strengthen one in soul, to inspirit: Luke 22:43 (L brackets WH reject the passage).

to strengthen: in spiritual sense, Luke 22:43; pass., Acts 9:19 (Rec. ἐνισχύσεν , became strong, as in LXX, Genesis 12:10; Genesis 48:2, al.).†

For the transitive use of this verb, as in Lk (Acts 9:19 : cf. Luke 22:43 D) cf. Hippocrates Lex. p. 2, 26 ὁ δὲ χρόνος ταῦτα ἐνισχύσει πάντα, ὡς τραφῆναι τελέως (see Hobart, p. 80 f.). In Theophr. Fragm. i. 65 τοῦτ᾽ ἐνισχύειν ἑκάστῳ, ";this, in each thing, is strong,"; we have the usual intrans, sense : see Abbott Fourfold Gospel, p. 177 n.3.
