1. Med., fut. -σομαι (in pass. sense) Id. HG 7.2.18: Pass., aor. ἐνηδρεύθην D. 28.2: pf. ἐνήδρευμαι Luc. Cal. 23: (ἐνέδρα): lie in wait for, lay snares for, τινά D. 40.10, Men. Kol. 44: Pass., to be caught in an ambush, to be ensnared, of animals, X. Mem. 2.1.5; μέλιτι Porph. Antr. 16; of persons to whom poison has been given, Phylarch. 10 J.: metaph., ὑπὸ νόμων τοὺς πολίτας ἐνεδρεύεσθαι Lys. 1.49; εἰ.. μὴ τῷ χρόνῳ ἐνηδρεύθημεν if we had not been deceived by time, D. 28.2.

The NT usage of this Lukan verb is well illustrated by P Rein 7.26 (B.C. 141 ?) δέομαι οὖν ὑμῶν τῶν μεγίστων θεῶν μή με ὑπεριδ [εῖ ]ν ἐνεδρευόμεν [ο ]ν ὑπὸ ἀνθρώπου [ἀγ ]νώμονος, ";I beseech you, therefore, most high gods, not to show yourselves indifferent to the trap laid for me by this unfeeling man,"; and P Oxy VI. 898.17 (A.D. 123) where a minor complains that his mother, in her capacity as guardian, ἐνήδρευσεν, ";laid atrap"; against him, by gaining possession of a certain deed : cf. ib. 938.2 (iii/iv A.D.) οὐκ ἀκόλουθον πρᾶγμα ἐποίησας ἐνεδρεύσας τὰς τροφὰς τῶν κτηνῶν τῆς Σεναώ, ";it was an unfitting act of yours to intercept the fodder of the oxen at Senao"; (Edd.), P Giss I. 105.24 (v/A.D.) ἵνα μὴ εν (om.) ἐνεδ ̣ρ ̣ε [ ]σῃς τὴν διάπρασιν, ";that you may not place difficulties in the way of the sale,"; and from the inscrr. III. 484.10 (A.D. 138) ὡς ἐνεδρεύσαντι Δ., ";with defrauding D.";, and P Ryl II. 239.16 (mid. iii/A.D.) πέμψο [ν ] δὲ πάντως αὐ [τῶν ] τὸ σύμβολον. . . πολλάκις Σ. . . [ ]ν ̣ε ̣δρευσεν ἡμᾶς, ";by all means send the receipt; S. has often defrauded us"; (Edd.).
