1. resting on opinion, probable, generally admitted, ἔ. τὰ δοκοῦντα πᾶσιν ἢ τοῖς πλείστοις ἢ τοῖς σοφοῖς, opp. to what is necessarily true (τὰ πρῶτα καὶ ἀληθῆ), Arist. Top. 100b21, cf. EN 1145b5, Rh. 1355a17, al.; ἡ ἔ. διδασκαλία popular teaching, Gal. 2.247.
2. Adv. -ξως, συλλογίζεσθαι plausibly, opp. ἀληθῶς, Arist. SE 175a31.
III conceited, οὐκ ἔνδοξοι πρὸς τὸ μαθεῖν ἃ μὴ ἴσμεν not too proud to learn, Erot. Fr. 60.
ἔνδοξος, ἔνδοξον (δόξα), held in good or in great esteem, of high repute;
a. illustrious, honorable, esteemed (Xenophon, Plato, and following): 1 Corinthians 4:10 (thus in the Sept. for נִכְבָּד, 1 Samuel 9:6; 1 Samuel 22:14; Isaiah 23:8, etc.; Sir. 11:6 Sir. 44:1, etc.).
b. notable, glorious: τά ἔνδοξα, wonderful deeds (A. V. glorious things), Luke 13:17; (for נִפְלָאות, Exodus 34:10).
c. splendid: of clothing (A. V. gorgeous), Luke 7:25; figuratively equivalent to free from sin, Ephesians 5:27.

An interesting example of this adj. is found in a letter from the Emperor Vespasian confirming certain privileges bestowed on an athletic club by the Emperor Claudius, P Lond 1178.34 (A.D. 194) (= III. p. 216) εἰδ ]ὼς ὑμῶν τῶν ἀθλητῶν τὸ ἔνδοξον καὶ φιλότειμον πάντα ὅσα [καὶ ] ὁ Κλαύδιος αἰτησαμένοις ὑμεῖν συνεχώρησε καὶ αὐτὸς φυλάττειν [π ]ροαιροῦμαι. In P Leid Wxiv. 9 (ii/iii A.D.) we have an invocation which runs—βασιλεῦ βασιλέων. . . ἔνδοξο (l.—ε) ἐνδοξοτάτων, and in the curious mantic text P Ryl I. 28.108 (iv/A.D.) the twitching of the right leg is said to portend that the man will ";become illustrious";—γενέσθαι ἔνδοξον. In P Oxy VI. 943.4 (vi/A.D.) an agreement is reached τῷ ἐνδόξῳ οἴκῳ regarding the payment of certain dues. For the adverb we may cite OGIS 513.11 (iii/A.D.) where a priestess is described—ίερασαμένην ἐνδόξως καὶ μεγαλοπρεπῶς : cf. Kaibel 358.3 ζήσασα ἐνδόξως.
