1. commerce (acc. to Arist. Pol. 1258b22, of three kinds, ναυκληρία, φορτηγία, παράστασις (qq. vv.)), mostly used of commerce or trade by sea (cf. ἔμπορος 111), Hes. Op. 646, Thgn. 1166, Simon. 127, etc.; ἐμπορίαν ποιεῖσθαι Isoc. 2.1; ἐμπορίας οὐκ οὔσης Th. 1.2; ἐὰν κατὰ θάλατταν ἡ ἐ. γένηται Pl. R. 371a; κατ' ἐμπορίην, Att. -ίαν, for trade-purposes, Hdt. 3.139, Simon. l. c., Isoc. 17.4, etc.; ἐμπορίας ἕνεκα or -κεν, Th. 1.7, 6.2; πρὸς ἐμπορίαν Ar. Av. 718: pl., τὰς ἐ. τὰς κερδαλέως ib. 594 (anap.); περὶ τὰς ἐ. διατρίβειν Arist. Pol. 1291a5, cf. D. 56.8.
2. a trade or business, AP 6.63.8 (Damoch.), Matthew 22:5.
3. errand, business, E. Hyps.Fr. 5.11 (anap.), Luc. Scyth. 4; journeying, πενία ἀζημίωτος ἐ. Secund. Sent. 10.

For this NT ἅπ. εἰρ. (Matthew 22:5) see P Giss I. 9.3 ἀποστάντ [ο ]ς εἰς Ὀᾶσιν ἐνπορίας χάριν, ";for the sake of business."; In P Oxy I. 76.10 (A.D. 179) the words κατά τινα ἐμπορίαν have been erased in the original. Cf. also Syll 118.32 (mid. iv/B.C.) ἐπιδημῶσιν κατ᾽ ἐμπορίαν Ἀθήνησι, OGIS 629.164 (A.D. 137) ὅσα εἰς ἐμπορείαν φέρεται. Aristeas 114 ἐργάσιμος γὰρ καὶ πρὸς τὴν ἐμπορίαν ἐστὶν ἡ χώρα κατεσκευασμένη.
