ἔκπαλαι, adverb (from ἐκ and πάλαι, formed like ἐκτοτε (cf. Winers Grammar, 24 (23); 422 (393); Buttmann, 321 (275))), from of old; of a long time: 2 Peter 2:3; 2 Peter 3:5. (A later Greek word, from Philo down; see Lob. ad Phryn., p. 45ff.)

Vocabulary of the Greek NT

This late word (for the form, see Proleg. p. 99), which in the NT is confined to 2 Peter 2:3; 2 Peter 3:5, occurs in P Oxy VI. 938.3 (iii/iv A.D.) ἔκπαλαι ἐπισταλεὶς δώδεκα σαργάνας χόρτου ἐκεῖ ἀποστεῖλαι, ";although you had been long ago instructed to send twelve baskets of hay thither"; (Edd.) : cf. the fragmentary OGIS 584.5 (ii/A.D.) δι᾽ ὧν ἔκπαλαι αὐτὴν (sc. τὴν πατρίδα) εὐεργέ [τησεν. Ἔκτοτε is found in P Oxy VIII. 1119.28 (A.D. 254) ἔκτοτε μαθ ̣[ὼν ὑπέστ ]η ̣ν τὴν ὑπὲρ αὐτῶν λειτουργίαν, ";thereafter on learning this I undertook the burden on their behalf"; : cf. ib. III. 486.9 (A.D. 131).
