scatter or spread about, [τὰς μνέας].. αὐτοχειρίῃ διέσπειρε τῇ στρατιῇ Hdt. 3.13; διέσπειρε ἡμέας ἄλλην ἄλλῃ τάξας dispersed us, ib. 68; δ. λόγον X. HG 5.1.25; τοὔνομα εἰς τὴν Ἀσίαν Isoc. 5.104; squander, S. El. 1291: — Pass., to be scattered, κρατὸς διασπαρέντος αἵματός θ' ὁμοῦ Id. Tr. 782; πῶλοι διεσπάρησαν ἐς μέσον δρόμον Id. El. 748; of troops, διεσπαρμένοι Th. 1.11, X. HG 5.3.1, etc.; φύσεις ὁμοίως διεσπαρμέναι equally distributed, Pl. R. 455d, cf. Sph. 260b, etc.; ἡ ψυχὴ διασπείρεται is dissipated, Epicur. Ephesians 1 p.21U.; τὸ διεσπαρμένον δόγμα the current opinion, Id. Nat. 14.7; τῶν χρωμάτων διεσπαρμένων Ael. NA 11.21.
διασπείρω: 2 aorist passive διεσπάρην; to scatter abroad, disperse; passive of those who are driven to different places, Acts 8:1, 4; Acts 11:19. (In Greek writings from (Sophocles and) Herodotus down; very often in the Sept..)

The verb is found in a list of persons subject to the poll-tax, P Lond 259.73 (Roman) (= II. p. 38) διεσπαρμένα διὰ τῶν τοῦ ι ̄γ ̄ (ἔτους) ἐνκεφαλαιω (μάτων). We have no citations for the noun διασπορά, but it occurs in Plutarch.
