I entice or catch by a bait, τὴν γραῦν δ. λεπαστῇ Antiph. 45, cf. Hdn. 2.15.3; δ. τινὰς ἐπὶ πλεονεξίαν Onos. 6.10: Pass., γαστρὶ δελεάζεσθαι X. Mem. 2.1.4, cf. Isoc. 8.34, Epicur. Sent. Vat. 16, Phld. Lib. p.14O.; ῥᾳστώνῃ καὶ σχολῇ D. 18.45; ὑπὸ χρημάτων, ὑπὸ τῆς ἡδονῆς, Luc. Apol. 9, Jul. Or. 6.185a.

II c. acc. cogn., νῶτον ὑὸς περὶ ἄγκιστρον δ. put it on the hook as a bait, Hdt. 2.70; but δ. ἄγκιστρον ἰσχάδι bait it with a fig, Luc. Pisc. 47; δ. ἄγκιστρον ἐπ' ἄλλους to catch others. ib. 48.

δελεάζω; (present passive δελεάζομαι); (δέλεαρ a bait);

1. properly, to bait, catch by a bait: Xenophon, mem. 2, 1, 4, et al.

2. as often in secular authors, metaphorically, to beguile by blandishments, allure, entice, deceive: τινα, 2 Peter 2:14, 18; James 1:14, on this passage cf. Philo, quod omn. prob. book § 22.
