III Adv. -τως without power or skill, feebly, ἀμύνεσθαι Antipho 4.3.3, cf. 3.3.4 (Comp.), Lys. 12.3: — ἀ. ἔχειν to be unwell, Pl. Ax. 364b; to be unable, c. inf., Arist. Rh.Al. 1435a16; ἀ. ἔχει it is impossible, Epicur Ep 32.49U.; ἀ. λέγεται it is an impossible story, Phld. Rh. 2.122 S. — Rare in poetry: Trag. only in E.
ἀδύνατος, (δύναμαι) (from Herodotus down);
1. without strength, impotent: τοῖς ποσί, Acts 14:8; figuratively, of Christians whose faith is not yet quite firm, Romans 15:1 (opposed to δυνατός).
2. impossible (in contrast with δυνατόν): παρά τίνι, for (with) anyone, Matthew 19:26; Mark 10:27; Luke 18:27; τό ἀδύνατος τοῦ νόμου 'what the law could not do' (this God effected by, etc.; (others take τό ἀδύνατος here as nominative absolutely, cf. Buttmann, 381 (326); Winer's Grammar, 574 (534); Meyer or Gifford at the passage)), Romans 8:3; followed by the accusative with an infinitive, Hebrews 6:4, 18; Hebrews 10:4; by an infinitive, Hebrews 11:6.

In P Par 66.23 (late Ptol.) πρεσβύτεροι καὶ ἀδύνατοι are men ";not strong enough"; to work : cf. also P Lond 971.4 (iii/iv A.D.) ( = III. p. 128) ἀδύνατος γάρ ἐστιν ἡ γυνὴ διὰ ἀσθένιαν τῆς φύσε [ως ] and ib. 678.6 (B.C. 99–8) ( = III. p. 18) ἀ ]δύνατ [ος ὄμμ ]ασι. In Syll 802.35 (iii/B.C.) ἀδύνατος is associated with ἀπίθανος, applied to ἰάματα, ib. 512.24 (ii/B.C.) of witnesses unable to appear.
