ἀδῠνᾰτ-έω,
I of persons, to be ἀδύνατος, lack strength, Epich. 266, Arist. Somn.Vig. 454a27: c. inf., to be unable to do, Hp. de Arte 7, Pl. R. 366d, X. Mem. 1.2.23, Arist. EN 1165b22, Pol. 1287b17, etc.
II of things, to be impossible, LXX Job 10:13, Phld. Ir. p.98 W., Matthew 17:20, Luke 1:37, Ps.-Callisth. 3.26.
ἀδυνατέω, (ῶ: future ἀδυνατήσω; (ἀδύνατος);
a. not to have strength, to be weak; always so of persons in classic Greek
b. a thing ἀδυνατεῖ, cannot be done, is impossible; so only in the Sept. and N. T.: οὐκ ἀδυνατήσει παρά τῷ Θεῷ (τοῦ Θεοῦ L marginal reading T Tr WH) πᾶν ῤῆμα, Luke 1:37 (the Sept. Genesis 18:14) (others retain the active sense here: from God no word shall be without power, see παρά, I.
b. cf. Field, Otium Norv. pars iii. at the passage); οὐδέν ἀδυνατήσει ὑμῖν, Matthew 17:20 (Job 42:2).

Applied to persons this verb retains its classic sense, ";to be incapable,"; in late Greek : cf. P Par 35.36 (B.C. 163), διὰ τὸ ἐμὲ ἐν κατοχεῖ ὄντα ἀδυνατεῖν, ib. 63.13 f. (B.C. 165) ὅπως μήτεν τῶν ἀδυνατούντων γεωργεῖν περισπᾶται μηθείς, and .89 f. τοὺς ἀδυνατοῦντας ἀναγκάζειν ἐπιδέχεσθαι τὰ τῆς γεωργίας. The neuter sense, ";to be impossible,"; when applied to things, appears in the LXX, which seems to tell in favour of the AV rendering in Luke 1:37, as against the RV : see Hatch Essays p. 4, Field Notes p. 46 f., where the true reading παρὰ τοῦ θεοῦ (RV) is rendered ";for from God no word (or, nothing) shall be impossible.";
