1. twig or branch, esp. vinetwig, Ar. Ec. 1031, Hp. Epid. 4.50, 6.3.8, Thphr. HP 2.5.5, CP 3.14.6, al.; ἀμπέλου κ. Pl. R. 353a: generally, cutting, slip, ὁ βλαστὸς τοῦ κ. X. Oec. 19.8, cf. Arist. HA 550b8: metaph., ἀνατετμήκασί τινες τὰ κ. τὰ τοῦ δήμου D.ap.Aeschin. 3.166; of the navel string, πεῖσμα καὶ κ. τῷ γεννωμένῳ καρπῷ Democr. 148.

2. vine-switch, cane, carried by Roman centurions, Lat. vitis, Plu. Galb. 26, etc.

II = πιτυοῦσσα, Dsc. 4.165; = πολύγονον, Plin. HN 27.113.

κλῆμα, κληματος, τό (from κλάω, which see), equivalent to κλάδος, a tender and flexible branch; specifically, the shoot or branch of a vine, a vine-sprout: John 15:2-6 (so Aristophanes eccles. 1031; Aeschines in Ctesias (), p. 77, 2; Theophrastus, h. pl. 4, 13, 5; ἀμπέλου κλῆμα, Plato, rep. i., p. 353 a.; the Sept., Ezekiel 15:2; Ezekiel 17:6; Joel 1:7).
