εὐχαριστέω was originally = ";do a good turn to,"; ";oblige,"; as in P Petr II. 2 (4).6 (c. B.C. 260) (= Witkowski.2, p. 24) εὐχαριστήσεις μοι, ";gratiam meam merebis, gratiam tibi habebo,"; ib. 15 (3).7 (B.C. 241–39) τοῦτο δὲ ποιήσας εὐχαριστήσεις ἡμῖν, ";by doing this you will oblige us"; (Ed.), P Hib I. 66.5 (B.C. 228) ὥστε σε μὴ διὰ κενῆς εὐχαριστῆσαι ἡμ [ῖν, ";so that you shall not oblige me to no purpose"; (Edd.), P Eleph 13.7 (B.C. 223–2) εὐχαριστήσεις οὖμ μοι σαυτοῦ τε ἐπιμελόμενος, ";oblige me by taking care of yourself"; (on the use of the fut. see Proleg. p. 177). In late Greek this passed readily into the meaning ";be grateful,"; ";give thanks"; : cf. Lob. Phryn. p. 18 ";pro gratias agere ante Polybium usurpavit nemo."; Thus we have P Amh II. 133.2 (early ii/A.D.) πρὸ τῶν ὅλων ἀσπάζομαί σε καὶ εὐχαριστῶ σοι ὅτι ἐδήλωσάς μοι στὴν (l. τὴν) ὑγείαν σου, P Oxy I. 71 i. 22 (A.D. 303) πρὸς τὸ δυνηθῆναί με τὰ ἴδια ἀπολαβεῖν καὶ τὴ [ν ] τ ̣υ ̣χ ̣ην σου εὐχαρειστῖν, ";so I shall be enabled to recover my property and acknowledge my gratitude to your excellency"; (Edd.), and more particularly with a religious reference, P Lond I. 42.11 (B.C. 168) (= I. p. 30, Selections, p. 10) ἐπὶ (cf. 1 Corinthians 1:4) μὲν τῶι ἐρρῶσθα [ί ] σε εὐθέως τοῖς θεοῖς εὐχαρίστουν, ";I immediately gave thanks to the gods that you were well,"; P Tebt I. 56.9 (late ii/B.C.) καλῶς οὖν ποήσῃς εὐχαριστῆσαι πρῶτον μὲν τοῖς θεοῖς, δεύτερον δὲ σῶσαι ψυχὰς πολλάς, BGU II. 423.6 (ii/A.D.) (= Selections, p. 90) εὐχαριστῶ τῷ κυρίῳ Σεράπιδι, ὅτι μου κινδυνεύσαντος εἰς θάλασσαν ἔσωσε, and from the inscrr. Syll 807 as cited s.v. ἀναβλέπω (cf. Luke 17:16). See also Ramsay ExpT x. p. 54 for the prevalence of the formula εὐχαριστῶ τῇ θεῷ in votive inscrr., recalling at once the Pauline εὐχαριστῶ τῷ θεῷ μου. [On the place of ";thanksgiving"; in early letters, and the correspondence suggested with the outward form of the Pauline Epistles, cf. Deissmann LAE, p. 168 n..3, Milligan Documents, p. 93.] With the use of the passive in 2 Corinthians 1:11, Deissmann (BS, p. 122) compares the mutilated P Petr II. 2 (4).8 (B.C. 260–59) εὐχαριστηθείς μοι. In still another set of passages εὐχαριστέω passes into the meaning ";pray,"; as P Lond 413.3 (c. A.D. 346) (= II. p. 301) ε [ὐ ]χ [αρ ]ειστῶ (εὐχαριστῶ GH) τῷ θεῷ περὶ [τῆ ]ς σ [ωτ ]ηρίας, ib. 418.3 (c. A.D. 346) (= II. p. 303) εὐ ]χ ̣α ̣ρ ̣ι [σ ]τ [ο ]ῦμε τ [ῷ ] θεῷ π ̣ε ̣ρ ̣ι ̣̣ [τ ]ῆς ̣ ὁλοκληρα σε (? l. ὁλοκληρίας σου) (both as amended P Lond III. p. 387), and the vi/A.D. Christian amulet BGU III. 954.4 (= Selections, p. 132) εὐχαριστῶ ἐγὼ Σιλουανὸς υἱὸς Σαραπίωνος καὶ κλίνω τὴν κεφαλήν [μο ]υ καενώπιόν (l. κατεν —) σου. MGr εὐκαριστῶ, ";thank,"; ";satisfy.";
