Vocabulary of the Greek NT

ἐπίγνωσις is found in P Tebt I. 28.11 (c. B.C. 114) πρὸς τὸ μὴ ἕκαστα ἐπ᾽ ἐπίγνωσιν ἀχθ [ῆναι, where the editors render ";in order to prevent the details being accurately known"; : it is doubtful, however, whether the addition of ";accurately"; is required. The term, as in Philippians 1:9, Hebrews 10:26, may well have been borrowed from the popular philosophy of the day : cf. Epict. ii. xx. 21 λαβὼν. . . κανόνας εἰς ἐπίγνωσιν τῆς ἀληθείας.
