2. metaph., fruitless, unprofitable, πόνος B. Fr. 7.5; λόγοι Pl. Phdr. 277a; τὰ ἄ. Arist. EN 1125a11. Adv. -πως S. OT 254.
II Act., making barren, A. Eu. 942, cf. Max. Tyr. 5.4.
ἄκαρπος, (καρπός) (from Aeschylus down), without fruit, barren;
1. properly: δένδρα, Jude 1:12.
2. metaphorically, not yielding what it ought to yield, (A. V. unfruitful): Matthew 13:22; Mark 4:19; destitute of good deeds, Titus 3:14; 2 Peter 1:8; contributing nothing to the instruction, improvement, comfort, of others, 1 Corinthians 14:14; by litotes pernicious, Ephesians 5:11 (Wis. 15:4; cf. Grimm on Wis. 1:11).

The adj. may be cited from P Oxy I. 539 (A.D. 316) ὅθ [εν ] ἐφῖδον τὴν περσείαν ἄκαρπον οὖσαν πολλ [ῶ ]ν ἐτῶν διόλου ξηραντῖσαν. For the subst. see Syll 42030 (i/A.D.) διὰ τὰς γενομένας ἐφ [εξ ]ῆς ἀκαρπίας τῶν ἐλαιῶν.
