a. the act of picking out, choosing: σκεῦος ἐκλογῆς (the genitive of quality; cf. Winers Grammar, § 34, 3 b.; (Buttmann, 161 (140f))), equivalent to ἐκλεκτόν, namely, τοῦ Θεοῦ, Acts 9:15; specifically used of that act of God's free will by which before the foundation of the world he decreed his blessings to certain persons; — ἡ κατ' ἐκλογήν προφεσις, the decree made from choice (A. V. the purpose according to election, cf. Winer's Grammar, 193 (182)), Romans 9:11 (cf. Fritzsche at the passage, p. 298ff); — particularly that by which he determined to bless certain persons through Christ, Romans 11:28; κατ' ἐκλογήν χάριτος, according to an election which is due to grace, or a gracious election, Romans 11:5; with the genitive of the person elected, 1 Thessalonians 1:4; 2 Peter 1:10.

Vocabulary of the Greek NT

In the Royal Ordinances issued by Euergetes II. and the two Cleopatras, P Tebt I. 5.166 (B.C. 118), it is enacted that officials are not to take the richest Crown land from the cultivators by fraud μηδὲ ἐπὶ ἐγλογῆι γεωργεῖν, ";nor to cultivate it at choice,"; i.e. select the best land for themselves. Similarly in the marriage contract, P Oxy III. 496.15 (A.D. 127), provision is made that in certain eventualities the ";choice"; shall rest with the bride—ἐκλογῆς οὔσης περὶ τὴν γαμουμένην : so ib. 497.19 (early ii/A.D.), ib. IV. 729.41 (A.D. 137), CPR I. 22.23 (ii/A.D.). Cf. BGU IV. 1158.13 (B.C. 9) where two contracting parties retain τὴν ἐξουσία (ν) καὶ ἐγλογὴ (ν) . . . πράσσειν τὸ κεφά [λ ]αιο (ν), ";the power and choice to call in the principal."; In P Flor I. 47.14 (A.D. 213–17) (= Chrest. II. p. 158 ) ἀπέσχεν. . . ὑπὲρ ἐκλογῆς ἀργ (υρίου) (δραχμὰς) διακοσίας, the reference is to an ";additional payment"; made to equalize an exchange of property : cf. BGU IV. 1013.16 (time of Claudius or Nero), P Ryl II. 157.6 (A.D. 135). [Cf. ἡ ἔγλογος = ";the surplus,"; Wilcken Ostr i. p. 733.] The word occurs in an interesting connexion in the epitaph of M. Julius Eugenius, Bishop of Laodicea, composed about A.D. 340–2, where Ramsay (Exp VII. ix. p. 53) reads ε [ἰς τύμβον ἐ ]μὸν τῆς τε ἐκλ [ογῆς ἀπ ]ὸ τοῦ γένους μου, ";to be my grave and that of the Elect from my race"; : cf. Romans 11:7. ";He belonged to a family some of whose members were still pagan; and he restricted the right of sharing this sepulchre to those members who were Christian."; In the sepulchral inscr. Preisigke 4315.8 Ἐκλογὴ καλουμένη, the word is a proper name.
