II demand an account of, τὸ αἷμα LXX 2 Samuel 4:11, al., cf. Luke 11:50 (Pass.).

Thayer's Expanded Definition

ἐκζητέω, ἐκζήτω; 1 aorist ἐξεζήτησα; passive, 1 aorist ἐξεζητήθην; 1 future ἐκζητηθήσομαι; (ἐκ out from a secret place, from all sides); the Sept. very often for דָּרַשׁ, also for בִּקֵּשׁ, etc.;

a. to seek out, search for: properly, τινα, 1 Macc. 9:26; figuratively: τόν κύριον, τόν Θεόν, to seek the favor of God, worship him, Acts 15:17; Romans 3:11 (Tr marginal reading WH marginal reading ζητῶν); Hebrews 11:6 (Psalm 13:2 (); Psalm 33:5; (Psalm 34:5); Psalm 68:33 (); Amos 5:4, etc.).

b. to seek out i. e. investigate, scrutinize: τί, Sir. 39:1, 3; περί τίνος, to examine into anything, 1 Peter 1:10, where it is joined with ἐξερευναν (to seek out and search out), as in 1 Macc. 9:26.

c. to seek out for oneself, beg, crave: Hebrews 12:17.

d. to demand back, require: τό αἷμα τῶν προφητῶν ἀπό τῆς γενεάς ταύτης, to take vengeance on this generation for the slaughter of the prophets (after the Hebrew, cf. 2 Samuel 4:11; Ezekiel 3:18; see ἐκ, I. 7): Luke 11:50 (51). (In secular authors thus far only a single passage has been noted in which this word appears, Aristid. or. 8, i., p. 488 (i. e. orat. 38, i., p. 726, Dindorf edition).)

[in LXX chiefly for H1875, also for H5341, H1245, etc.;]

1. to seek out or after, search for: c. acc pers. (1 Maccabees 9:26); fig., τ . κύριον , θεόν (cf. Psalms 14:2, Amos 5:4, al.), Acts 15:17, Romans 3:11, Hebrews 11:6; εὐλογίαν , Hebrews 12:17; ἐξεζήτησαν κ . ἐξηραύνησαν (as in 1 Maccabees 9:26), sought and searched out: 1 Peter 1:10.

2. As in 2 Samuel 4:11, Ezekiel 3:18; Ezekiel 3:20 al. (H1875), to demand, require: Luke 11:50-51

I. 488) cited by Thayer and LS, we can now add BGU IV. 1141.41 (B.C. 14) περὶ δὲ τῆς σκιᾶς φανερόν μοι ἐγενήθη ἐκζητήσαντι ἠλλάχθαι μὲν τὴν πορφυρᾶν ῢ ̣π ̣ο ̣, τοῦ Διοδώρου καὶ μὴ δεδωκέναι σοί, P Oxy XII. 1465.11 (i/B.C.) ἀξιῶ συντ [ ]ξ ̣α ̣ι ̣ ̣[κ ] η ̣τ ̣ήσαντα ̣ς ̤ τ ̣ο ̣υ ̣ς ̣ α ̣[ἰτίο ]υ ̣̓, ";I request you to give orders (to your subordinates) to search out the guilty persons"; (Edd.), and the inscr. from Hierapolis Cagnat IV. 834.5 δώσει. . τῷ ἐκζητήσαντι δηνάρια δισχίλια. With Luke 11:50 ἵνα ἐκζητηθῇ τὸ αἶμα πάντων τῶν προφητῶν, cf. the use of the simplex in the Jewish prayer for vengeance Syll 816.12 (ii/B.C.) ἵνα ἐγδικήσῃς τὸ αἷμα τὸ ἀναίτιον ζητήσῃς καὶ τὴν ταχίστην : for the text and the date, see Deissmann LAE p. 423 ff.
