ἀνήκω; (imperfect ἀνῆκεν); in Greek writings to have come up to, arrived at, to reach to, pertain to, followed generally by εἰς τί; hence, in later writings ἀνηκει τί τίνι something appertains to one, is due to him namely, to be rendered or performed by others (1 Macc. 10:42 1 Macc. 11:35; 2 Macc. 14:8), and then ethically τό ἀνῆκον what is due, duty (R. V. befitting), Philemon 1:8; τά οὐκ ἀνήκοντα unbecoming, discreditable, Ephesians 5:4 (L T Tr WH ἅ οὐκ ἀνῆκεν, Winers Grammar, 486 (452); (Buttmann, 850 (301))); impersonally, ὡς ἀνῆκε as was fitting, namely, ever since ye were converted to Christ, Colossians 3:18 (Winers Grammar, 270 (254); cf. Buttmann, 217 (187) and Lightfoot at the passage).

ἀν -ήκω

prop., to have come up to; in later writers, impers. it is due, it is befitting: in ethical sense (MM, VGT, s.v.), Ephesians 5:4, Colossians 3:18; τὸ ἀνῆκον , Philemon 1:8.†

The ethical meaning of this word ";to be due"; is by no means confined to the Biblical literature, as the following citations will show. OGIS 532.17 (B.C. 3), the Paphlagonians’ oath of allegiance to Augustus, has the undertaking παν ]τὶ τρόπωι ὑπὲρ τῶ [ν ] ἐκείνοις ἀνηκό [ντων ] (for the rights of Augustus and his heirs) πάντα κίνδυνον ὑπομενεῖν. Other examples of this use, which is found in 1 and 2 Maccabees, are given in the index. From the Magnesian inscriptions we may quote 53.65 (end of iii/B.C.) οὐθενὸς ἀποστήσεται (sc. ὁ δῆμος) τῶν ἀνηκόντων τῇ πόλει τῶν Μαγνήτων πρὸς τιμὴν ἢ χάριτος ἀπόδοσιν, where Thieme (p. 15) renders, ";was man der Stadt der Magneten zu erweisen schuldig ist."; Similarly from the papyri : P Fay 94 (iii/A.D.) has twice περὶ τῶν [τῇ ἐπιτροπείᾳ ] ἀνηκόντων, as the editors restore it, ";his duties in the period of guardianship, functions pertaining to it."; In P Tebt I. 6.41 (ii/B.C.) τῶν ἀνηκόντων τοῖς ἱερο [ῖς κομίζεσθαι, ";the dues which belong to the temples,"; it is unfortunately not clear whether the infinitive depends on ἀνηκόντων or on the main verb προστετάχαμεν : cf. P Tebt I. 43.25 (B.C. 118) ἐν τοῖς ὑμῖν ἀνήκουσι, ";in your interests";. In P Flor I. 1.4 al. (A.D. 153) ἀνηκόντων πάντων is simply ";all that belongs."; A technical use based on this appears in a Rainer papyrus in Chrest. I. 72, p. 101, (A.D. 234) δηλοῦμεν μηδὲν δεῖν ἀνῆ [κον σ ]ημᾶναί ποτε τῇ τοῦ ἰδιολόγου κ [αὶ ἀρχ ]ιερέως ἐπιτροπ (ῇ), where Wilcken explains it as the ";Kompetenzkreis"; of these two officials.
