Cyclopedia of Biblical, Theological and Ecclesiastical Literature

a German preacher, was born Jan. 4, 1789, at Heigendorf, in Weimar. He belonged to a Huguenot family, whose name was originally Chaudien, which the father of Johann D. Fr. changed into Schottin. Having completed his studies at Jena, he was in 1814 appointed pastor at K stritz, in Reuss, where he remained till his end, May 16, 1866. He was an excellent pulpit orator, but the many calls which he received from Hamburg, Bremen, and Jena he refused. He is best known as one of the most recent German hymn writers. Besides, he published a number of devotional works. See Zuchold, Bibliotheca Theol. 3, 1176; Literarischer Handweiser, 1866, p. 309; Koch, Geschichte des deutschen Kirchenliedes, 7, 75. (B.P.)
