Garland translates in modern translations two Hebrew and one Greek term, all referring to wreaths worn on the head. Garlands symbolized instruction or the benefit of wisdom (Proverbs 1:9; Proverbs 4:9 ). In Isaiah 61:3 ,Isaiah 61:3,61:10 garlands form part of the bridegroom's wedding apparel. Israel's days of Exile, pictured as mourning, would give way to the celebration of God's salvation, pictured as a wedding. At Acts 14:13 the priest of Zeus brought Paul and Barnabas garlands. In Greek mythology the gods were frequently portrayed wearing garlands. Mistaking the apostles for Zeus and Hermes, the priest deemed garlands a suitable gift.
